Homes
Rooftop systems have limited space and often sit in the shade of trees or neighbouring buildings, so panel layout is driven by finding sun and avoiding shade. System size follows the household's actual consumption.
What to check before choosing equipment
- Roof type (metal sheet, tile, concrete) determines which mounting systems can be used
- Shade from trees and neighbouring buildings sets where and how many panels fit
- Day versus night usage indicates whether battery storage is needed

Commercial buildings
Commercial buildings draw most power during opening hours, which is when panels generate most. Work here focuses on matching output to the hours power is actually used, and usually goes onto roofs that already carry other plant.
What to check before choosing equipment
- The hours of heaviest use determine the most economical system size
- Rooftops usually carry existing plant such as air conditioning and skylights to route around
- Installing on an occupied building has to be planned around the people using it

Industrial plants
Factory roofs offer large areas that fit many panels, but the layout has to route around skylights and existing rooftop plant. Systems at this size call for industrial-grade equipment and a systematic post-installation inspection.
What to check before choosing equipment
- On a large roof, panel layout and cable routing materially affect total output
- Skylights and existing rooftop plant constrain the layout
- Systems this size justify thermal drone inspection to find underperforming panels
